The work is committed to comprehensive design solutions that address the urgent concerns of environmental degradation, our limited natural resources, and the vulnerability of the built environment.
CHARLES SPARKMAN, AIA, LEED AP BD+C
With work spanning residences, schools, universities, public parks and landscapes, large-scale institutional projects, and national monuments, Charles has focused his career at the intersection of contemporary performance-based design and emerging building technologies, integrating high-performance net-zero carbon and energy usage strategies into architecture of timeless craft and beauty.
Charles earned his Bachelor of Arts from Duke University and his Master of Architecture from the University of Virginia, where he served as a William R. Kenan Teaching Fellow, Sarah McArthur Nix Travelling Fellow, Editor of lunch (the School of Architecture’s design publication), and was recognized with the AIA Henry Adams Medal. Charles served on the faculty of the University of Virginia, where he continues to serve as a guest critic and lecturer. He has practiced at Duda|Paine (NC), Frank Harmon (NC), Weiss/Manfredi (NY), and KieranTimberlake (PA), where his work has been recognized with several national, state, and local AIA awards, and has been featured in Architectural Record and Architect. Charles currently practices at Quinn Evans (DC), where his projects include the renovation and addition to several federal buildings along the National Mall in Washington D.C.
